Friends of Barnett Newman Triangle
Website Design
Freelance Client Work
Date: Summer 2024
Goal: To create a website for the Friends of Barnett Newman Triangle that would help their organization get approved as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Additional goals of the website are to inform community members about the history of the plaza at the intersection of White and Church streets in Tribeca, and the Friends’ plans to advocate for building a park in that plaza.
Visual style: For this project, I drew inspiration from the plaza’s namesake, Barnett Newman, who had a very distinct artistic style. I began by researching his artwork and was particularly drawn to his “Onement” pieces, characterized by solidly colored canvases, disrupted by strong vertical lines which he called “zips”
Colors: I was also inspired by his color choices when working on the color palette for this project. Although Newman did not use green in the “Onement” pieces that I looked at, I included it because my client’s mission emphasized the importance of turning this empty plaza into a green space.
Typefaces: My typeface research was inspired by typefaces that were designed or popular during the time that Barnett Newman was actively working in Tribeca.
